New Gear: Ronin-M

I just added DJI’s Ronin-M to my arsenal of gear. Though I’m still getting the hang of using it, I’m already blown away by it’s potential.

The main issue I’m dealing with is ensuring a moving subject is in focus. I haven’t been able to attach a monitor my C100 without the HDMI cable affecting the gimbal. I hoping the ultra-thin HDMI cable I ordered from B&H resolves the issue.

I used the Ronin-M on one short shoot with decent results. Some shots weren’t as sharp as I would like. If my SmallHD was attached, this issue would go away.

The other issue is that I can’t balance the C100 on the tilt axis because of it’s size. When you tilt the camera back, the viewfinder makes contact with the gimbal (it’s a tall camera). This doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal since ‘auto-tune’ mode is happy with the overall balance of the camera.

All in all, this is an amazing piece of machinery and I plan to use it on most of my upcoming shorts. Here’s a test I did with my friend Ted at a nearby parking structure using my Canon C100, Sigma 30mm ART Lens, 1250 ISO, 1.4 aperture. Looks pretty sweet, right?
