Camera Gear As Of Today

I purchased the C100 back in May 2015 around the same time I started my YouTube Channel. I’m still amazed by the images I get out of this camera. While there’s quite a few cameras on the market with better specs (4K, RAW, HDR) etc., the C100 has been a solid, versatile, workhorse, and everything I need for my current workflow. I don’t plan on switching to another camera for at least another year.

Along with the C100, I usually pack my Audio Technica 4053B mic. I chose this mic after working with a Rode NTG2 for years and getting sick of the echo it would pick up indoors. I’ve heard good things about the Rode NTG3 from Adam Forgione, who uses it for every situation. I have yet to try it myself. I’d love to hear from someone who has used both a 4053B and NTG3.

My lens of choice is the Canon EFS 17-55mm f2.8. This is the lens I use 90% of the time. It’s great to have image stabilization on a fast zoom lens with constant aperture. I started out using a Sigma 30mm 1.4 prime on the first few shorts, then switched to the 17-55. Way more versatile.

These three items C100, AT4053B, EFS 17-55 f2.8 work for most situations. If I’m not in a run and gun situation, I’ll take a small HD501 monitor, and a Zoom H5. Otherwise I’ll use plug directly into the Canon C100 preamps. It can be distracting to monitor levels on Zoom H5, and pull focus on the SmallHD, when moving quickly from shot to shot.

I can see myself eventually upgrading to the C300 mkII if the price drops below $6000.  The two filmmaking workshops I attended in 2015 (one taught by Adam Forgione, the other Alex Buono) both used the Canon Cinema line in their presentations. I’m curious to see what Canon does with it’s Cinema line in the next few years, and if they can maintain their foothold in the market.
